Causes of Street Creep Damage
Concrete expands when it becomes hot and contracts when it becomes cold. To prevent slabs from cracking, contractors will create expansion joints in sidewalks to accommodate natural expansion and contraction.
However, during the cold months, the problem of street creep begins. As expansion joints fill with debris like sand or gravel when it’s cold, slabs won’t be able to handle expansion properly when it becomes hot again.
As temperatures rise and concrete expands, the slabs will push against each other. The entire sidewalk or expanse of concrete will grow at once, exerting pressure on your driveway, garage slab, or house foundation. The process is slow, creeping by only a fraction of an inch each year, but the problem becomes apparent over time.
